dados volum{\'e}tricos do radar polarim{\'e}trico banda X e as
vari{\'a}veis: refletividade horizontal (Zh), refletividade
diferencial (Z\$_{dr}\$), fase diferencial espec{\'{\i}}fica
maiores variabilidades, possuindo valores de at{\'e} 45 dBZ e
+1\$^{°}\$ kmS\$^{-1}\$, respectivamente, para as tempestades
mais intensas. Estes resultados foram interpretados como uma forte
intrus{\~a}o de {\'a}gua l{\'{\i}}quida super-resfriada e a
exist{\^e}ncia de graupel nesta camada. No entanto, a assinatura
rel{\^a}mpagos. Estes importantes resultados abriram perspectivas
segunda etapa foram avaliadas as caracter{\'{\i}}sticas
microf{\'{\i}}sicas e el{\'e}tricas antes do primeiro
intra-nuvem (IN) e fontes de VHF.
fase fria.
A principal
regi{\~a}o de forma{\c{c}}{\~a}o desses rel{\^a}mpagos IN e NS
(\$\sim\$ 50 dBZ) e Z\$_{dr}\$ positivo (\$\sim\$ +3 dB).
Assim, o conhecimento adquirido neste trabalho apresenta uma
contribui{\c{c}}{\~a}o cient{\'{\i}}fica in{\'e}dita para a
previs{\~a}o de rel{\^a}mpagos e de tempo severo. ABSTRACT: The
main objective of this research was to analyze the relationship
between polarimetric signatures from thunderstorms and lightning.
The work was divided into two parts. In the first part we
evaluated how the polarimetric signatures for the different
regions of the thunderstorms changes as a function of lightning
frequency. Data from X-band radar and sources emitted by lightning
in Very Higher Frequency (VHF) were used during the CHUVA-Vale
campaign. A merged dataset between radar information and lightning
was created and nine million of the vertical profiles were
analyzed. The following variables were used: horizontal
reflectivity (Z\$_{h}\$), differential reflectivity
(Z\$_{dr}\$), specific differential phase (K\$_{dp}\$) and
correlation coefficient (\$\rho\$\$_{hv}\$). The warm phase
region presented the greater variability as a function of the
lightning frequency. This region was characterized with an
enhanced positive Z\$_{dr}\$ (+4 dB) and K\$_{dp}\$
(+5\$^{°}\$ km\$^{-1}\$), related for higher Z\$_{h}\$ (40
dBZ) for the strongest thunderstorms. These results indicated the
formation of flattened large raindrops for the thunderstorms with
the highest lightning frequency. In contrast, the mixed and cold
phase region showed lower variability as a function of the
lightning frequency. For the mixed phase region Z\$_{h}\$ and
K\$_{dp}\$ showed the greater variability with values up to 45
dBZ and +1\$^{°}\$ km-1, respectively for the strongest
thunderstorms. These signatures suggested the existence of
supercooled rain drops and graupel in this region. However, the
remarkable signatures was the enhanced negative K\$_{dp}\$ (-
0.5\$^{°} \$km\$^{-1}\$) in the cold phase region in higher
electrification situations. It was suggested higher concentration
of ice particles aligned vertically by strong electric field and
suggested this signature as an important parameter for the
lightning nowcasting. These previous results showed a good
opportunity for the development of the second part of this work.
In the second part we evaluated the lightning and microphysics
characteristics before of the first lightning in compact/isolated
thunderstorms. A total of 53 thunderstorms were analyzed through
Plan Position Indicator (PPI) volumes, intra-cloud (IC) and
cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes and VHF sources. In the first step of
this part we found that the majority (90 \%) of the first CG
flash in incipient thunderstorms showed a remarkable single-stroke
behavior and negative polarity. The results of the second step
showed a remarkable decreased in Z\$_{dr}\$ before the first CG
flash suggesting signatures from graupel in the mixed phase region
and ice particles aligned vertically by strong electric field in
the cold phase region. A thunderstorm that occurred close to LMA
center was selected to evaluate the electrical structure. A
tripolar structure was observed with positives centers close to 6
km and 11-12 km. These flashes initiated close to 7 km
(-17\$^{°}\$C) on the top of column with higher reflectivity
(\$sim\$ 50 dBZ) and positive Z\$_{dr}\$ (\$\sim\$ +3 dB).
This work provides an important knowledge to the contribution for
the lightning nowcasting.",
